I have often seen and heard about them but I have never read any of Louis L’Amour’s books. I had to travel with some long flights and airport layovers ahead of me so I picked up one to read on the trip. Just speaking for this one and not the series in general, it is well done and easy to read to pass the time. It has the trick of grabbing you quickly right in the first sentences. It is solidly in the Western style and stereotypes where a stranger comes to town and seems preternaturally capable and correct about almost everything. It might be nice to see a counter-example short story some time where the character keeps making mistakes and doesn’t know what is going on but keeps trying. Still I would recommend this.
