These oddities in our calendar come about from trying to force together a natural year (365.242 days), a natural month (29.53 days, measured by moon phases), and a day (1.00 days). I suspect a week is also tied up here as a way to divide a lunar month into four equal parts (7.38 days).

These cycles don’t fit evenly together despite us really, really wanting them to. In the West, we have largely gotten away from matching yearly months to the moon, but we still insist on fitting days to the year.

This makes me think of all kinds of directions I could go in. Decimal calendars and decimal time as an alternative to our system (and duodecimal as an alternative to a base 10 system, which kind of fits better with our time units). Cultures that have five days weeks and other alternative systems. Lags in the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, which I briefly mentioned in the post about Old Christmas. The International Fixed Calendar, and all kinds of calendar reform proposals as well as larger-than-year natural units such as the Sothic Cycle.

However, I have to fix breakfast for everyone and run some errands this morning so these elaborations will have to wait. In the meantime, happy leap day! and here are some links:

https://abc7.com/leap-day-year-birthday-2024-baby/14472620/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pirates_of_Penzance

https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2024/02/world/leap-year-meaning-explained-dg-scn/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_calendar

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adoption_of_the_Gregorian_calendar

Happy leap day!
